WELCOME TO RAVEN

FROM THE CREATIVE TEAM

At the start of many rehearsal processes, the director of the play talks about their vision for the production and why the play speaks to them. I have been so excited to program Ironbound for many reasons, and director Georgette Verdin’s opening remarks solidified for me what is at the heart of this incredible play:

“It is rare, as a freelance artist, that one gets the chance to tackle a project that feels as on mission as Ironbound does for me. Its scope, themes, aesthetic- all so perfectly aligned with the type of work that I find most fulfilling to craft and to share with audiences. The most meaningful work I’ve done to date are stories that center the intimate lives of women. It is deeply upsetting that having an ordinary woman at the center of a play still feels like an act of rebellion.

There is nothing extraordinary about Darja’s life, which is precisely why, in my opinion, it’s worth celebrating. What is extraordinary is Darja’s resilience, her resourcefulness, her access to humor even in her darkest moments, and her iron will to support her son by any means necessary. And what Martyna Majok has pulled off in the writing of this play is extraordinary. I believe that audience members who know nothing of Martyna, her life or reasons for writing Ironbound, will be able to feel how an aching truth oozes through and beneath her words. This play is littered with moments of quiet revolution, worthy of our attention and respect.

You could say this is a play about any number of issues: immigration, the working poor, domestic violence, motherhood, etc. But we get to experience those issues through the lens of a really badass, funny, practical woman who refuses to relinquish her agency despite being pressed and squeezed by a system designed to keep women and other marginalized people firmly in place at the bottom of the proverbial ladder.

In other words, the power of this play’s politics is due to the way Martyna is laser-focused on the hyper-personal. I’m very grateful to Lucy Carapetyan for not giving up on the Chicago premiere of this play, to Sarah Slight for the courage to program it and to both of them for entrusting that I can deliver, with the help of exceptional collaborators, a production that matches the dignity, love and truth that Martyna clearly poured into the script.”

SPECIAL OFFERS FROM OUR DINING PARTNERS:

A note from Raven Theatre’s Managing Director:

Thank you so much for joining us for the first production of Raven Theatre’s 42nd Season, and the inaugural production of Artistic Director, Sarah Slight, and my joint partnership. We couldn’t be more proud of all of the thoughtful, creative, and dedicated work that went into the making of what you are about to see in this Chicago premiere from Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, the brilliant Martyna Majok, directed with exquisite care by celebrated Chicago theater director Georgette Verdin.

This play is a perfect representation of what we envision for the future of this theatre and community.

Stories connect us – to each other, and to parts of our selves yet to be discovered. How lucky are we to bear witness to a story such as IRONBOUND where we could imagine all that could have been and all that still might be?

This is the power of theater.

In the next chapter of Raven Theatre you will witness first-hand our commitment to becoming a destination for culture through stories that connect us. By telling stories that feature new voices and new lenses, we hope to build bridges, grow audiences, and give our community every reason to get more involved and feel more connected.

If you like what you see, we invite you to join us (and tell your friends!) in shaping the next chapter for the theater.

There are several ways to get involved with Raven this season and be a part of its future success, including sharing your experience with your community, becoming a subscriber, donating to our mission, sponsoring one of our amazing productions or programs, or even volunteer.

ABOUT RAVEN THEATRE

Raven Theatre is in its 42nd year of providing revivals of modern dramas and thought-provoking new works to the Northside Chicago community, as well as theatrical education to the children and schools in the surrounding neighborhoods. Founded in 1983, Raven moved into its current home in 2002 with its 85 seat Johnson Stage and its 56 seat Schwartz Stage.

SUBSCRIPTION SERIES: Raven offers three productions in its subscription series, all in the Johnson Stage, focusing on revivals of works primarily from the late 19th century to the present and including both Chicago and World premieres.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING: Our Take Flight education program offers classroom and after-school theatre residencies to our neighboring schools and community partners as well as summer theater camp. Raven serves over 800 students & young people each year.

Take Flight is committed to sharing the importance and dynamic power of ensemble work. We believe that the guiding principle of all theatrical work is that of collaboration: respecting others, feeling the confidence to contribute and the courage to try something new. Exposure to these fundamental life lessons through the lens of theatre translates into every facet of scholarship, play, and community.

With efforts in the community, in neighborhood schools, and on the stage, Raven plays an important part in the city’s cultural landscape.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Raven Theatre Company resides on the ancestral homelands of an alliance of three Native American nations: Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi, known collectively as the Council of Three Fires. Dozens of other tribes, including the Menominee, Miami, and Ho-Chunk nations, called this region home. Today, thousands of native people continue to live and work in the city colonially known as Chicago.
