The Story Theatre

Are you ready for the revolution? We are.

The Story Theatre presents a staged reading of Marie Antoinette and the Magical Negroes by Terry Guest.
Wednesday, March 4th at 7:30pm.

“Marie Antionette & the Magical Negroes is a play about rage. Revolt. Revolution. It is about what happens when black people grow tired of sitting down and turning the other cheek. What are we left to do? Do we scream? Pray? Should we be peaceful? Should we riot? Can the tools we have used in the past possibly work for the future, or do we need to write a new script? Using trap music, fashion shows, and the backdrop of the French Revolution, I hope to explore these questions in a way that is as messy and complicated as public execution.”
-Terry Guest, Emerging Playwright-in-Residence, The Story Theatre

This revolutionary new play has been developed lovingly and courageously by director Regina Victor and the ensemble of The Story Theatre in three separate workshops through our Emerging Playwright Residency Program. This staged reading is the culmination of that work. Join us as we celebrate the newest play from Chicago’s rising star, Terry Guest, best known for his sold-out run of At the Wake of a Dead Drag Queen at The Story Theatre earlier this season.

MLIMA’S TALE

by Lynn Nottage

Directed by Jerrell L. Henderson

Presented by Griffin Theatre Company

Taking us on a journey from the heart of Africa and around the world, MLIMA’S TALE is the story of Mlima, a magnificent elephant trapped in the clandestine international ivory market. Nottage, who won the Pultizer Prize for her plays Ruined and Sweat, brings us a powerful story that makes us question whether unconditional virtue is nonexistent within the international system of economic power, culture, and politics.
