Private Lives

by Noël Coward

directed by Ian Frank

September 29 – November 13

Thursday, September 29 at 7:30 pm

In this sophisticated and wildly entertaining revival, once-married Elyot and Amanda cross paths on their unexpectedly adjoined honeymoons- same hotel, same resentments, but with new spouses. Sharp words evolve into fresh sparks, followed by an endless roundabout of chaos and romance where enemies become lovers and lovers become fools. This timeless, witty, and risqué play follows the ups, downs, and all-arounds of passion and betrayal. Are they in it for love… or for the thrill of it all? Raven’s 40th Season starts with a bang with a revival of Noël Coward’s farcical 1930 comedy!

Reviews

  • “Quite artful, but its intention clear.”

    Nancy Bishop, Third Coast Review
  • "Filled with delicious humor... a hoot and a holler."

Al Bresloff, Around The Town Chicago
  • “One of the first, and best, examples of the loopy 'screwball comedy' genre”

    Albert William, The Chicago Reader
  • "Every minute another zinger... The sarcastic wordplay elicits gasps and guffaws from the audience."

    Tristan Bruns, Newcity Stage
  • "This play, written in 1930, still brims with Cowardy comedy and command, thanks to Ian Frank’s tight direction. He has guided his cast in their creation of characters that are strong, honest and urbane, while giving the story a subtle update."

    Colin Douglas, Chicago Theatre Review
  • “Raven Theatre’s production, directed by Ian Frank, presses all of the buttons and then adds a few more in a perfect opening to its 40th season.”

    Karen Topham, Chicago on Stage
